An aeroplane being lowered into position during the development of the Transport Pavilion at the South Bank Exhibition, part of the Festival of Britain. 'The fastest vehicle on earth' is lowered into position. The Supermarine S6B seaplane, here with its wings removed, had set a world speed record of 407.5 miles per hour in September 1931. The popular seaplane was on show to the public in 'The Air' section of the Transport Pavilion, which celebrated British aviation. Its designer Reginald Mitchell also created the Spitfire.
