The great disaster on the Thames: burial of unknown dead at the Wolwich cemetery, East Wickham. This image shows the burials of the bodies recovered from the Thames after the Princess Alice disaster. Princess Alice was one of the many steamboats which provided recreation trips along the Thames in the 19th century. In 1878, Princess Alice came into collision with a collier. More than 600 holiday makers were drowned as a result. This illustration was published in the London Illustrated News, Vol. LXXXIII dated September 21, 1878, on page 272-273.
