'London in 1851'. This etching shows Piccadilly Circus and Lower Regent Street jammed with traffic on its way to and from the Great Exhibition. The great variety of transport - from private carriages to omnibuses and covered wagons - reflects the mix of society attending the exhibition. After the opening flurry, entry from Monday to Thursday as of 26 May was reduced to a shilling. Many people on low incomes took advantage of special excursion rates or put money aside in savings groups to pay for their visit.
