A book illustration showing Victoria Embankment, from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. Victoria Embankment, stretching from Westminster Bridge to Blackfriars, was constructed as part of Joseph Bazalgette's great plan to provide London with a sewerage system. The Embankment housed the low level sewer, cost £1,156,981.00 to build, and opened in July 1870.
