An Illustration entitled 'Dark House Lane, Billingsgate' from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. Dark House Lane is said to have been named after the Darkhouse Tavern. It was owned by the Stationers' Company from 1573 until 1874 when it was sold to make way for the development of Billingsgate market.
