The heavy turnery and smith shop
at John Penn’s factory.
John Penn & Sons had two large works, one a riverside site at Deptford that specialized in the manufacture of ship’s boilers and the other at Blackheath Road, Greenwich, that made marine engines. The owner is probably the figure standing centre right with his hands in his pockets. He employed around 12 00 men at Greenwich and a further 600 workers at Greenwich.
