The scrap forge at Messrs Penn &
Sons works.
Messrs James Ash & Co.
James Ash established his own shipbuilding yard in 1862. A skilled naval architect, he had
worked previously for C.J. Mare and the Thames Ironworks. Unfortunately, his yard closed after only four years of operation, largely as a result of the 1866 banking crash.
