These two photographs show the second Shadwell entrance lock at the eastern end of the London
Dock. Built between 1854 and 1858, it allowed larger ships to enter the dock. The church spire in the view looking west is that of St. Paul’s Church, Shadwell.
Beyond the pierhead looking up river, a mass of lighters and sailing barges can be seen as well as a steam tug.
