Taylor was a dramatist, critic, biographer who also edited Punch. He was a prolific playwright,
producing about a hundred plays, many of them adapted from other sources like Dickens’s novels. His
1863 success The Ticket-of-Leave Man, presented at the Olympic Theatre in Wych Street was the earliest example of a long-running play, with 407 consecutive performances.
