Barnard's Inn, the Inner Courtyard,1879. This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London to form part of a permanent visual record of historic buildings threatened with alteration or possible demolition in the 1870s and 80s. Barnard's Inn was one of the Inns of Chancery, which were professional associations representing solicitors in England and Wales. Originally founded in the mid-13th century, it was rebuilt after the Gordon Riots of 1780 and much redeveloped after this photograph was taken.
