An independent, or unlicensed, shoe-black. The shoe-blacking trade, mostly practised by children, was regulated by the Boot-black Brigades, established in 1851. However, there were a number of independent shoe-blacks who could not, or would not, pay the brigade's license fee.
From a series of 37 photographs published in the book, 'Street Life in London' (1877), with text written by Thomson and the journalist Adolphe Smith.
