Queen Anne's Gate, Bloomsbury, 1886. This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London to form part of a permanent visual record of historic buildings threatened with alteration or possible demolition in the 1870s and 80s. This early 18th century statue stood at the entrance to Queen Square and was believed to depict Queen Anne, though it is now thought to be a representation of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George 111. Many of the buildings in Queen Square are now used for medical research and healthcare administration.
