A boy eating take away chips in the street. Chips have been a popular dish in Britain since the early 19th Century. It is said that it was Joseph Malin who opened the first fish and chip shop in London in Cleveland Street in 1860. By the 1950s shop bought chips were traditionally wrapped in greaseproof paper bags or newspaper both to keep them warm and to make eating them outdoors easier.
