College Street, City of London, 1884.
College Street contains several historic buildings, including Innholders Hall, the headquarters of the Worshipful Company of Innkeepers, rebuilt soon after the Great Fire of London in 1670 and whose entrance doorway is on the left of the photograph, and, in the background, St. Michael's Church which was built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1694. This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London to form part of a permanent visual record of historic buildings threatened with alteration or possible demolition in the 1870s and 80s. At the time the photograph was taken there was a debate about the future of the Livery Companies and so the Society may have felt that Innholders hall was at risk, though in fact it survives today virtually unchanged.
