Oxford Market, 1881.
Situated to the north of Oxford Street, on the west side of Great Titchfield Street, Oxford Market was built in the early 18th century and was one of a number of open markets serving the poor of London. Many of them closed during the 19th century, however, largely as the result of redevelopment, and Oxford market was demolished shortly after this photograph was taken.
This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London to form part of a permanent visual record of historic buildings threatened with alteration or possible demolition in the 1870s and 80s.
