Dirty father Thames. Wood engraving for 'Punch Magazine', vol. XV, July-December 1848. This satirical image refers to the polluted state of the river Thames in the mid 1800s. Been refered to as the 'Great Stink', the Thames filled with sewerage, moved around and into surrounding houses with its tidal flow.
