The roof of a condemned house in Cable Street, Stepney. During the 1950s there were large-scale programmes of house demolition and building new housing estates. London has always consisted of areas of wealth together with areas of grinding poverty. Many people lived in appalling, cramped and unsanitary conditions. Cable Street was notorious during the 1950s for its social problems.
