Two boys playing in a derelict street in East London in 1951. London has always consisted of areas of wealth together with areas of grinding poverty. Many people lived in appalling, cramped and unsanitary conditions. During the 1950s there were large scale programmes of demolition and the rebuilding of housing estates.
