Most workers in London wore second-hand clothes. A coat like the one this man is wearing would cost five shillings but, if it were new, would fetch around £2 – well beyond the pocket of most people. Judging by the pair of rapiers he holds, this clothes seller was prepared to exchange garments for swords.
