These students from Sierra Leone are studying at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Opened in 1929, this institution continues to contribute to improving international public health. The original London School of Tropical Medicine was founded in 1899 at the London Docks. Sailors arriving from Africa, India and the Far East often suffered from illnesses not previously seen in Britain's colder climate. The study of tropical diseases like malaria and sleeping sickness also promoted better medical care for inhabitants of British colonies overseas.
