These women are practising their shorthand in the commercial department at Brixton College. Many of these full-time students came from the West Indies. Although the photograph is not dated, it was probably taken during the 1950s or 1960s. Most West Indians in Brixton arrived after World War II. These students would have hoped to find jobs in London using their secretarial skills.
