This photograph shows Jacob C.N. Ugwu at the rostrum at Holborn College of Law. Ugwu was a 28-year-old Nigerian student in the third year of his LL.B law degree course. He intended to do a research degree in law in England before returning home to practise in Nigeria. Nigeria became independent in 1960. Like many African countries emerging from the rule of colonialism, Nigeria was economically under-developed. It needed trained professionals like lawyers to build up the country's legal system.
