This is a portrait of Bryan Edwards who emigrated to Jamaica where his uncle owned a number of sugar plantations. Edwards inherited these when his uncle died. He is best known for writing a two-volume book 'History, Civil and Commercial, of the British Colonies in the West Indies' (1793). With other plantation owners, and later as a member of parliament in Britain, Edwards fought against the abolition of the slave trade. However, he was in favour of introducing certain reforms.
