Oliver Cromwell's death mask, showing wart over the right eye. A gentleman farmer from Huntington, Cromwell became Lieutenant-General of the parliament forces during the Civil War and subsequently Lord Protector of England from 1653 until his death. Cromwell gradually assumed the pomp and style of a king, without the title, taking up residence in Whitehall Palace, where he died in 1658.
