'The View and Humours of Billingsgate'. Satirical view of a the quayside at Billingsgate which formed one of Vanhaecken's series 'Ye Wonders of the Deep' (the other plates are all fish still lifes). The scene is one of chaos where oyster and eel sellers with their laden baskets crowd the quayside, and many go flying out of the way as a mounted horseman comes charging in from the left. The plate is accompanied by four columns of verse contrasting Billingsgate's present as a market with its past as a Court "where bows were made to Ministers of State".
