Roman wood scoop. This Roman scoop or spoon was found by Southwark Bridge. Its handle is carved into the shape of what may be the head of a Black man. The Roman Empire included parts of Africa and the Emperor Septimus Severus, who was born in Libya, died in York in 211. An African regiment was based at Hadrian's wall. Although most of its soldiers were Berbers from North Africa, others may have come from Mauritania in West Africa.
