Full image caption

Miniature head fashioned from a hard, asymmetric chalk nodule. The piece is complete in itself and not part of a larger object. The face was carved in low relief by scoring into a carefully prepared flat surface with a sharp, presumably metal, blade. This has left traces of cut marks - particularly around the eyes, below the nose and on the profile of the left cheek. Found on the Thames foreshore, immediately upstream of Chelsea Bridge, on the Surrey shore, in October 1993.
