Looking down Clink Street from Southwark Cathedral. Noel Spencer was a student at the Royal College of Art during the 1920s and he retained a fascination with recording the City. At the time this painting was made he was Head of the Norwich School of Art, but visited London frequently. He is said to have based this work on a pencil sketch he made in 1946. This painting captures the narrow streets of riverside Southwark when the area was coming to the end of its life as an area of working wharves and warehouses.
