Full image caption

Post-medieval gold gimmel ring with interlocking gold hands and bezel. Shown closed. When open, the ring has an inscription that reads: 'As hands do shut soe hart be knit', reveling a secret shared by the wearer and her lover. This message of union and afection is reinforced by a small heart on the uppermost hand. This type of rings represented the perfect token of mutual fidelity and love in the Elizabethan and Jacobian period, when marriage practices required material proof of contract and gold rings were used to indicate marital intent or consent.
