Under the Brewery: Whitechapel Jews sheltering during a fire-raid

This drawing shows a war scene: Whitechapel Jews sheltering under Whitechapel brewery during a fire raid. During the Blitz, German bombs brought death and destruction to London, and the East End was hit particularly hard. In response, many Londoners went underground. This is a close-up depiction of two sleeping men, wrapped in blankets. The drawing is signed Edmond Kapp. He was a painter and draughtsman as well as a masterly caricaturist. Here he depicts two unknown Jewish men in a shelter under Whitechapel Brewery. Wrapped in blankets, they sleep in what look like deckchairs alongside the shelter's other residents.
