Full image caption

Roman silver box and strainer. It may have been associated with an initiation ceremony. This is one of the most mysterious finding from the temple of MIthras. It was found after the removal of a 19th century foundation cut into the north wall of the temple. Its porpose is uncertain and the symbolism of the figures of men and animals on the box is obscure. It may be connected with the idea of death and re-birth associated with an initiation ceremony.
