Reverse of a lozenge-shaped seal inscribed with the year 1548 and H.L. This vesica-shaped, pointed oval-shaped seal for the Royal Hospital of St Katharine-by-the-Tower and the Royal seal for Ecclesiastical Causes. The back is engraved with the initials HL and the date 1548. According to the hospital ordinances of 1351, the seal was to be kept under lock and key and could be used only with the agreement of the brothers and sisters of the hospital.
