Full image caption
Shard of hard coarse grey ware, possibly Rhineland Granular Grey ware, from a wide-necked jar. The vessel would have been burnished to a glossy almost metallic finish. The shard has a moulded relief ornament in the shape of a frog with depressions on the inside which correspond with embossed ornament. The details of the eyes and feet were incised after the figure was applied. Two more shards of this vessel (rim and handle fragments) survived and it is likely that the vessel would have between two and four handles. The vessel may have been used in the cult of Sabazius.
