image details

Full image caption
Ground and polished flint axe-head with a thin butt and an oval section. It is set on a modern wooden haft. Large numbers of ground and polished flint and stone axeheads were made between 4000-2200 BC. Many were brought from great distances. Axes like this were used for felling trees. The first known examples of flint axes were deposited in the river, suggesting that they had special significance. This flint axe was found in the Thames at Long Reach, Kent.
