Axehead: middle bronze age

© Museum of London

image details

Full image caption
Bronze flanged axehead with thin wide blade showing shoulders and shield pattern with central rib. The flanges are bevelled externally as far as the shoulder. There are distinct 'hammer' marks on both faces of the blade. This axehead was found in the Thames at Milton, near Gravesend, Kent. The decorations on this axehead suggests that these weapons were as much for display as they were for use.
