Full image caption
Large, Roman hand-made ceramic jar, with coarse brownish -grey fabric and grey outer surface. The jar has an incised decoration in the shoulder band, and burnished decoration above. The clay used in the making of this jar is a local shell tempered clay. The jar was possibly used to store salt. The black 'print' around the rim is a pitch like substance, made from birch tree bark and was used to seal the pot. This jar was found at a Roman settlement at Brentford.
