Small, highly decorated and multi-coloured plate. The centre of the plate is decorated with a classical scene. It shows the goddess Minerva with Cupid and other figures in a exotic landscape. This polychrome high-relief moulded vessel was found in a stone-lined well on the former site of the Dominican Priory of Black Friars, which was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539. This piece was made in Saintonge in the style of the 16th century French potter, Bernard Palissy. Similar vessels have been found with naturalistic and Biblical scenes and it is possible that themed garnish sets were purchased to commission. Luxury decorative wares of this type might have served as a spice, fruit or sweetmeat dish in the banquet course.
