Full image caption

Pewter badge of an archer. The archer is shown standing and handling a bow and arrow. He wears a short buttoned jacket, hose and a garter above the knee. He has a horn on a strap slung across his body. Badges celebrating feats of arms and outdoor pursuits were very popular in the 14th century. They harked back to a past golden age of chivalry and were perhaps worn by young men who fancied themselves as knights. The huntsman on this badge is dressed with a band (chaplet) around his head and jewelled garter above his knee to hold up his hose. With his hunting horn slung over his shoulder, he is preparing to shoot his barbed arrow towards his prey.
