Full image caption
Green glazed tile with decoration in relief of a full length representation of St. Jude ( AKA Saint Judas Thaddeus) standing in an archway between two pillars. St. Jude is shown here wearing a long robe. Above his head there are the images of two cherubs. This tile was once part of a ceramic stove that was imported from Germany in the early 1500s. It was probably specially commissioned by one of the wealthy religious houses in London. Many stove tiles were decorated with Biblical scenes and representations of the apostles. These luxury items would have been used almost exclusively by the aristocracy or rich monastic houses.
