Full image caption
Fine wineglass, decorated with trail of blue glass around the stem. This example was probably made in Italy or southern France. It was found during excavations on the site of Winchester Palace, on Bankside, Southwark, the great London home of the Bishop of Winchester. Being south of the Thames, in Surrey, Winchester Palace lay within the bishop's own see, and allowed him easy access to the royal court in Westminster, as well as to London merchants who could provide him with imported luxuries like fine glassware.
