The Spring Garden was a pleasure ground laid out at the start of the 17th century, closed during the Commonwealth but later re-opened. By the 18th century it was mainly known for its Great Room- variously a concert-hall, exhibition space and museum. There is still a street, Spring Gardens, SW1.
The date of the work is problematic: there are three other watercolours apparently by the same artist showing scenes dated to 1846, 1848 and 1850, suggesting that the artist was working from pre-existing prints.
