This reinforced cap was worn by the postilion in the Lord Mayor's Show of 1863. The Lord Mayor's State Coach is drawn by three pairs of horses. The postilion rides the left horse of the front pair to help the coachman control the horses.
The main body of the cap is covered with velvet. The peak is embroidered with gold thread in an oakleaf pattern, which is also repeated in the gold braid. The dragon used as the crest of the cap is embroidered with a compass.
