This beautifully embroidered jacket was worn by the postilion in the Lord Mayor's Show of 1863. The left sleeve bears the coat-of-arms of Sir Wiliam Lawrence, who was elected Lord Mayor that year. Also embroidered is his motto: 'per ardua stabilis' (firm in adversity). The Lord Mayor's State Coach is drawn by three pairs of horses. The postilion rides the left horse of the front pair to help the coachman control the horses.
