A view of the Milliner’s shop in the Victorian Walk Gallery
Respectable women in Victorian London always covered their heads outdoors.
At the milliner’s they bought hats, bonnets and caps, as well as artificial flowers, feathers, ribbons and lace to decorate or
‘trim’ them. Following Paris, fashions changed frequently. Milliners would clean and redesign hats to suit the latest taste.

The ‘Victorian Walk’ uses original
shopfronts and objects from the Museum’s collection to capture the atmosphere of London life at the close of the 19th century –
a shopping arcade, a barber’s, a bank manager’s and clerk’s offices, a public bar, a back alley of warehouses and workshops.
