Hal or Halle is a small town in Belgium. In 1919 a group of Catholic missionaries from the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, came to Britain from the town, to create a base from which to direct their work and to create a sanctuary for refugees. They settled in Camden and in 1922 they built a small hut on a site just opposite the present church. It was the first Catholic Church in the area and was immediately popular. The missionaries commissioned Irish architect Wilfred Mangan to design and build a church which reflected their Belgian origins and in 1933 Our Lady Of Hal opened to parishioners.
