This image shows a dark tortoise shell visiting card case with central mother-of-pearl panels and inlaid mother-of-pearl flower decoration. The case would have held cards printed with the name and sometimes address of the lady owner. Such cards would have been left at the home of an acquaintance or friend if the caller found the person they had come to visit was not at home or unable to receive visitors.
