The Lyons Corner House.
A window from the Coventry Street Corner House, the first of the Corner Houses established by J. Lyons & Co. The front is painted cream with gold lettering behind glass and says 'J. LYONS & CO LTD CATERERS'. The window is metal-framed with curved glass panels. The Coventry Street Corner House opened in 1907, and was extended in 1921-1923. This window was added as part of this remodelling of the building. The building was extended again in 1930, by which time it could seat 4500 customers. Corner Houses were large catering establishments that incorporated restaurants, cafes and confectionery shops at modest prices, and played a key role in the growth of dining out as a popular social habit.
