In 1818 the theatre started life as the Royal Coburg, promising the nobility and the gentry 'entirely new entertainment... on a scale of magnitude and great expense'. The opening night included a melodrama, an Asiatic ballet and a harlequinade.
In 1988 the Mirvish family put the theatre on the market. There were suggestions for changing it into a themed pub, a bingo hall or a lap-dancing club. This provoked widespread outrage and protests. In response to public and political pressure, it was acquired by The Old Vic Theatre Trust 2000.
In 2003 the Old Vic once again became a producing house. Kevin Spacey was appointed the first artistic director of The Old Vic Theatre Company.
