This photograph shows Policewomen on parade, during World War I. The women are being inspected by Mary S.Allen who had previously served as an organiser in the Women's Social and Political Union. As a suffragette she had served three terms of imprisonment for breaking the windows of Government buildings in London and Bristol. On the outbreak of war Mary joined the police service and attained the rank of Commandant.
