A poster for the English Opera Company, Theatre Royal, Adelphi, Strand. It is advertising the performance "Skeleton Lover!" on Wednesday 21st July 1830.
London theatres in the 19th century competed to attract audiences, vying with each other to offer evermore extravagant and spectacular entertainments. Technical developments in the printing industry brought new typefaces which they seized upon to create bold and eye-catching playbills. The promised attractions were described in great detail and often illustrated with wood-block engravings.
Gothic romances involving supernatural and horrifying events were popular. Mary Shelley's Gothic novel 'Frankenstein', published in 1818, remained a runaway success. This playbill for the Theatre Royal, Adelphi, advertises a production of 'The Skeleton Lover!' in July 1830. The tale of a 'Transylvanian Necromancer', it is set in Castle von Glowenstein in Hungary.
